“In the summer of 2009, I injured my back on the job. I was diagnosed with a herniated disc and a ruptured disc in the Lumbar region (L4/L5 and L5/S1). This injury led to excruciating lower back pain, as well as radiating leg pain.

Two Surgeries with No Pain Relief “After two years of trying to live with severe pain, I turned to surgery, hoping to find relief. The first surgery, under the care of a Neurosurgeon, was not only unsuccessful, I was left with permanent numbness in my right leg and other areas. Someone could have held a lit cigarette to my leg and I would have felt nothing. I went to another surgeon, hoping for a solution to both the original injury and the damage from the first surgery.
Spinal Cord Stimulation … Last Resort to Pain Relief “My second surgeon suggested there was an alternative option I may wish to consider for the pain. That took some time, so I had to live without the treatment for several days. Thirty minutes after removal of the trial stimulator, that excruciating pain was back with a vengeance. The pain was so severe, I could hardly walk, and I was, once again, depending on pain medication just to get through my day.
“Because the SCS trial worked so well to relieve my chronic pain, Workman’s Comp approved the permanent procedure. After this, I was able to drive again, work out at the gym, kayak, walk and even work again.
“Since 2011, the Spinal Cord Stimulator has allowed me to live without pain … and without pain medication. Now, I am able to enjoy a two-hour walk on the beach with my wife who now enjoys spending time with me, something I had really missed!

These days, living without pain, I am focusing on rebuilding my relationships with my family and friends that suffered while I was in so much pain, and enjoy cooking, exercising, working and being able to sit through church services, movies and one that is very exciting, attending my daughter’s college graduation!
